A Partnership Built on Service

Initiated by Dennis Tichenor and David Rich, the Milwaukie Lions Club has forged a meaningful partnership with two Lions Clubs in Lambayeque, Peru — Club Ciudad Evocadora and Club Llampallec. Together, we share a common mission: ensuring that children in the Lambayeque region have access to quality vision care, regardless of their family’s economic circumstances.

For over 16 years, our clubs have worked side by side to deliver vision care to those who need it most — distributing tens of thousands of reading glasses, providing vital vision screeners, and transforming thousands of lives. Now we are embarking on our most focused mission yet: providing professional eye exams and custom prescription glasses for schoolchildren in northern Peru.

Uncorrected vision problems are one of the most common and preventable barriers to learning. A child who cannot see the board clearly cannot learn effectively — and in underserved communities, access to eye exams and corrective lenses is often out of reach. Our partnership is working to change that.

What We’ve Accomplished Together

The dedicated women of Club Ciudad Evocadora have been the heart and hands behind the FACES surgical campaigns in Lambayeque for years. Today, they are expanding their mission directly into local classrooms — screening students, coordinating specialty care, and connecting with families to open up a world of learning through better vision. Their goal: provide vision screenings, professional exams, and custom prescription glasses to 120 school-age children every year.

In previous years, the Milwaukie Lions Club raised funds to purchase and deliver a SPOT Vision Screener — brought to Peru by Milwaukie Lions Charles Brod and Tom Carter during the 2024 FACES campaign. This state-of-the-art device can instantly identify children in need of corrective lenses. Now, we are raising funds to turn those screenings into real results.

Our Current Campaign

Right now, we are raising funds to provide eye exams and prescription glasses to children in Lambayeque. A gift of just $40 covers a full ophthalmological exam and custom prescription glasses for one student. In addition to financial support, we are also collecting donated eyeglasses — which will be cleaned, sorted, and shipped directly to our partners in Peru for distribution.

Campaign Goal: $10,000  |  Deadline: October 7, 2026

The first $2,000 in donations will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the Milwaukie Lions Club
doubling your impact at no extra cost to you.

Every $40 donated also earns you one entry in the Elk Cove Vineyards wine raffle
